Chicago Cub star and FEI Honorary President, Ernie Banks, is the latest recipient to receive the nation’s highest honor given to a civilian, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
On November 30, 2013 “Mr. Cub” himself will join a prestigious group of individuals when President Obama presents him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This medal is an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.
Ernie is still thought of as one of the nicest guys in Major League Baseball. He spent his entire 19-year career playing for the Chicago Cubs hitting .274 with 512 home runs and 1,636 RBI, making him one of the greatest shortstops to ever play the game. On Tuesday, Banks talked to MLB Tonight about being honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, “Is this a great country or what?,” Banks said. “It means a lot to me. It is just unbelievable. I didn’t play in a World Series. I didn’t play in any championship games. But this, to me, is my World Series. To accept this wonderful award from President Barack Obama has been a big, big thing in my life.”
